TextEd is a simple text editor. Because of the 16K field size limit imposed by HyperCard, a TextEd document cannot contain more than 16384 characters. TextEd will open and read text files greater than 16K in size, but it will truncate the file at the 16384th character (a dialog box will notify you if this happens).
TextEd uses a single pull-down menu which is placed in the HyperCard menubar. There are 10 menu items:
•1. New: Selecting this menu item will clear the current document and present an empty document page for you to work in. If the document page is not empty you will be asked if you wish to save the current document before beginning a new one.
•2. Open: This will present the standard Macintosh file dialog from which you may choose a text file to open as the current document. If the document page is not empty you will be asked if you wish to save the current document before opening a new one.
•3. Save: Once a document has a name other than "UnNamed" you may save it using the "Save" menu item. The current name is assumed and the existing disk copy of the file is overwritten with the current document.
•4. Save as: Presents the standard Macintosh "save as" dialog.
•5. Print: Calls the HyperCard Print dialog. To print the current document select only the field named "Text Box" and select "Columns" as the print mode. See the HyperCard User's Manual for details.
•6. Find: Presents a dialog box into which you type the characters you wish to search for. To repeat the search for the next occurrence press the "Enter" key on the keyboard. TextED remember the last group of characters you searched for.
•7. Show Info / Hide Info: Allows you to show or hide a file information window at the bottom of the card. The 'Zoom Box' in the top right hand corner of the document window performs the same toggle function (and changes the menu item to correctly reflect the current state.
•8. Blank Screen: Activates a screen saver. To restore the card just click the mouse button. Try it!

•10. Quit: Exits the Card and returns to the point you were in when you called TextED. The 'Close Box' in the top left hand corner of the document window performs the same function. TextED retains its text between visits but it's always a good idea to save your work before leaving.
